How Small Group Leaders can Develop new Leaders

How can a Small Group Leader help small group members become great leaders?

Here are a few suggestions:

1. Be aware that God has called you to multiply your efforts by equipping others to do what you do (Matthew 28:19-20)

2. Commit to being a model of what a great small group leader is (1 Corinthians 11:1).

3. Each small group leader should make the Emerging Leader they’ve identified aware of the role they are learning to carry out (Matthew 4:19).

4. Practice the basic steps of leadership development:

1. I do…you watch…we talk
2. I do…you help…we talk
3. You do…I help…we talk
4. You do…I watch…we talk
5. You do…someone else watches

5. Give real-life opportunities for Emerging Leaders to practice leading (Luke 9:1-2).

6. Give the Emerging Leader resources (books, articles, CD’s, etc.) that will help them develop as a leader.

Think about it…

  • Who are you developing as a leader?
  • Why do you think it is important to develop Emerging Leaders?
  • What areas can you improve in, so that you will be more effective at developing leaders?
