One of the most vital qualities a leader must have is courage. Courage gives leaders the ability to do the things that make a lasting difference. Courage can be defined as doing the right things, even when they aren’t convenient, popular or easy. Courage is only obtained through daily decisions.

1) Know God gives you courage

Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them. Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Joshua 1:6-7

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7

We must confidently know anything that does not look like courage does not come from God. When we feel a lack of courage in our lives we can speak God’s Word and live what we have been promised.

2) Know God and His Word

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13

Come near to God and he will come near to you. James 4:8

God gives courage. In order to be courageous we must draw near to God by spending time communicating with Him.

3) Surround yourself with courageous people

Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” 1 Corinthians 15:33

Have you surrounded yourself with courageous people? You will quickly begin to take the form of the people with whom you surround yourself. If you look around and notice that the people you spend time with are not courageous, then you will have a difficult time leading courageously.

Points to ponder…

  • Am I living a courageous life? What do I need to do to grow in courage?
  • Do those I am leading see me as a courageous leader? Why or why not?

Prayer point…

Ask God to give you the courage to lead the way that He has called you to lead.
